Casting

A casting is a critical process in the modeling industry, serving as an audition where models are evaluated for potential jobs by clients, designers, or casting directors. When a model is called to a casting, it means they have the opportunity to present themselves for a specific project or campaign, whether it be for fashion shows, print advertisements, commercials, or other media.

During a casting, models typically provide their comp cards (a card with their photographs and measurements) and may be asked to walk or pose, allowing the casting team to assess their suitability for the role. Models might also wear simple clothing (often a form-fitting black outfit) to show their physique clearly. In some cases, models are requested to read lines or act out scenarios, especially for commercials or multimedia projects.

Casting directors look for models who not only fit the physical requirements of the job but also exhibit professionalism, confidence, and the ability to take direction well. The atmosphere can range from informal, with a quick look at the model’s portfolio, to more structured, involving a series of poses, walks, or even changes into specific outfits.

After the casting, if a model is selected for the job, they will be contacted by their agency or the casting director with details about the project, including dates, locations, compensation, and specific requirements for the shoot or show. This follow-up may occur within a few days to a couple of weeks after the casting, depending on the urgency of the project.

Success at a casting can lead to immediate work and often opens doors to further opportunities, as clients and casting directors remember models who make a strong impression. For the model, each casting is a chance to network, gain exposure, and build their portfolio, regardless of the immediate outcome.
